C. S. I. School for the Deaf – Kottaram

A school for the hearing impaired was established in Kottaram on 29-06-1966 with 20 students. It is a special school recognised by the handicapped rehabilitative board of the government of Tamil Nadu. This high school has a student and staff strength of 190 and 63 respectively

School for the Visually Handicapped Irenepuram

This school for the visually handicapped came into being in the year 1978 at Irenepuram. It has been supported by the Christian Blenden Mission till 1997 and it has been supported by many congregations and institutions of the Diocese. The handicapped and Rehabilitation department of the Government of Tamil Nadu has recognised this as a middle school and the teacher who are not recognised by the government receive management support. All the students reside in the hostel. There are 70 students and 7 teaching and 10 non teaching staff on its rolls at present.

The home and school for the mentally retarded children were started in 1980 at Kotticode. This was shifted to its new campus at Zion Hill, Chithiramcode in 1985 which now has 52 children.

Aims and Objectives of the Home

  • To provide to the mentally retarded children residential care and training for adjustment with family members and society
  • To train the mentally retarded children on vocational skills so that they become good citizens in the community
  • To prepare the mentally retarded children to compete like other children in the society.
  • To make them aware of all the benefits from the Government
  • To educate and build up the mentally retarded children academically, socially and spiritually.

The CSI Transitional Resource Center for the differently abled and the CSI School for the mentally retarded, Allencode

It is a special training centre for the polio afflicted children started in 17-08-1981. Now there are 68 children getting education and medical assistance.
